The update doesn't use a video surface anymore which leads to several issues:
– Poor bilinear scaling on most devices or no scaling at all (nearest neighbor) instead of the hardware scaling which is usually extremely high quality (lanczos or better) even on low end hardware that comes automatically with video surfaces.
– colorspace conversion issues leading to banding, black & highlight crushing or clipping as reported by a kind follower on twitter.
I get that multitasking is nice, but compromising with video quality is never a good idea.
Note: When you take a screenshot of your tablet displaying a video surface, you get a software conversion that is not what's actually shown on display by hardware decoding and scaling.
Sigh…
Yes, it's nearest neighbor on SGS (latest cm/semaphore)
It's awful. Also multitasking is badly implemented, it should take the whole bottom part of screen. It almost seems like its halfbaked because the real one is… system wiiiiiiide.
Speaking of wide, idiotic how all apps now look the same (cohesion vs cloning), which in youtube case means losing a ton of MARGIN space for anything text due to "card metaphor" …
Thanks Obama.
Major flickering too
+Steve Dobron on which device? I didn't noticed that on my tests so far.
+supercurio François Simond Galaxy Nexus/maguro. It was actually a concert video with strobe lights leading to the flicker, but the flicker was not a normal flicker. There must be a technical term for it but I don't know how to really describe it
+Steve Dobron the term is "tearing" as what you describe is a lack of vsync 😉
Thanks I'll test that too
Yep! That's it, looks exactly like my PC monitor when gaming if vsync happens to have turned itself off!
I'm so happy it wasn't just me. Terrible on the Nexus 10 and new Nexus 7, not too apparent on the SGS 4. And yes, I notice tearing too but only occasionally.
On top of that, they forgot the copy link button
+Adam Outler that was the first bad thing I found when using the updated YouTube. Been using it for two and a half days ow and this is the only real complaint I have about it to be honest. The copy link option is very nice to have.
Yeah, you can't refresh comments without killing YouTube then going back and searching for your video. The copy link let's you take it right to a browser where you get the refresh button.
I use it to post YouTube videos in Hangouts and SMS .
It's Google never gets something done % 100 right
+Adam Outler You can use Google Drive's "copy to clipboard" global share option to copy links from YouTube.
I usually use gmail. but that is kind slow too.
+Adam Outler +Amon RA yeah isn't it a custom share dialog? I was used to share to BSPlayer for higher quality real 1080p steaming.
They probably killed that to break YouTube downloader apps, meh :-

+supercurio François Simond I can still share to all apps (including youtube downloader). They probably got rid of the copy link menu item to unify the share button experience.
Ah, I see, share>copy to clipboard.
+Amon RA thanks for the rectification, I wonder why BSPlayer doesn't appear anymore then.
Too bad as it was a good temporary workaround for the video quality issue.
+supercurio François Simond I think BSPlayer removed the option in their last update. I just reverted to the old YouTube (uninstalled updates) and the share to BSPlayer is still missing…
+Amon RA yep same thing. As a result I'm experimenting with unofficial YouTube apps, some seem to play 1080p with correct 1:1 pixel mapping.
Problem is that they don't display content creator apps. Not that I'm a huge fan of ads but I know for a fact that they're critical to many YouTubers income.
I've noticed that, too. Nearest neighbor scaling on my Nexus 4! 🙁
+supercurio François Simond have any of these issues been fixed with the 5.0.1 update? It looks better to me (the untrained eye)! But it could just be placebo correction 5.0.21
Same nearest neighbor scaling here with 5.0.21 on Nexus 7 (2013).
